AFRICA | A young Nigerian scholar named Saheed Ahmed emerged as the world’s best veterinary student, earning him global recognition and a prestigious €5,000 award.
A graduate of the University of Ibadan (UI), Saheed’s achievement was celebrated by the World Veterinary Association (WVA) based in Washington, DC, United States, after a rigorous selection process.
The World Veterinary Association, a global body representing over eighty veterinary associations, recognized Saheed’s excellence in academic performance, leadership, community service, and advocacy work.
Speaking in an interview with Legit.ng, Saheed shared insights into his inspiring journey, highlighting the demanding yet rewarding process that led to his selection.

Speaking in an interview with Legit.ng, Saheed shared insights into his inspiring journey, highlighting the demanding yet rewarding process that led to his selection.
He explained that the award required a thorough application, backed by strong recommendations and a detailed review of academic, professional, and leadership credentials.
Reflecting on the process, Saheed noted that the application itself became a moment of deep personal reflection. It allowed him to truly appreciate the efforts he had made over the years, even at times when he wasn’t consciously keeping track.
He said winning the award made the journey feel even more magical, not just because of the financial reward, but for the recognition it brought to him and his beloved alma mater.
Saheed expressed immense pride that the University of Ibadan would now feature prominently in global campaigns associated with the award, giving future students from his school a brighter spotlight on the world stage.
Beyond the monetary prize, Saheed also received a round-trip to Washington DC, free accommodation for the duration of the World Veterinary Association Congress (WVAC) 2025, and a complimentary ticket to the event.
Saheed’s passion for veterinary medicine took root during his diploma studies at the College of Animal Health in Ibadan, where he graduated as the top student in his class.
He recalled how balancing his leadership roles with academics demands was challenging but he persevered.
As president of the Veterinary Student Association and later national president in Nigeria, he juggled rigorous coursework with national and international commitments, lessons he believes sharpened his resilience, time management, and sense of purpose.
Looking to the future, Saheed aspires to expand his impact in global health, One Health, and antimicrobial resistance, especially focusing on underserved communities.
He also plans to pursue advanced research and contribute to shaping policies that address the interconnected health challenges facing humans, animals, and the environment.
