AFRICA | Despite failing medical school, young Nigerian man returns to school, bags Microbiology degree after 12 years of study.
A determined Nigerian man named Ini Amah has finally graduated from the University of Uyo with a degree in Microbiology after a tumultuous 12-year academic journey.
His path, marked by resilience and personal growth, included a major setback when he failed out of medical school—a devastating moment that redefined his life.
In an interview with Zikoko, Ini reflected on his challenging journey. He mentioned that failing medical school was the firstt time he would experience failure in his life. Growing up, Ini had always been academically gifted.

His brilliance first became apparent in primary school, where he consistently ranked first in his class. However, his streak of academic dominance began to face challenges when he moved to secondary school, where the competition was tougher.
Despite these early hurdles, Ini excelled in mathematics, earning accolades in prestigious competitions like the Cowbell Secondary School Mathematics Competition and the National Mathematical Centre Olympiad.
By the time he completed secondary school in 2011, he was among the top students, with an impressive WAEC result of seven Bs and two Cs. Inspired by reading Gifted Hands by Ben Carson at age seven, Ini dreamed of becoming a doctor—a dream his academic achievements seemed destined to fulfill.
After two unsuccessful attempts to gain admission to study medicine, Ini was admitted into the Microbiology program at the University of Uyo in 2013. Determined to keep pursuing his dream, he wrote JAMB again while studying microbiology and finally secured admission to study medicine in his second year.
The rigors of medical school, however, were unlike anything Ini had experienced before. “The discipline required to succeed in medicine far outweighed intelligence,” he admitted.
Despite relentless studying, Ini struggled, particularly with biochemistry. After multiple attempts at the professional MBBS exams, his efforts ended in withdrawal from medical school in 2018.
Breaking the news to his parents was equally harrowing, especially given the emotional and financial investments they had made in his education. While his mother’s disappointment was overwhelming, his father remained supportive, reassuring him of his potential.
The following months were marked by depression and despair, including two suicide attempts. Yet, Ini credits the prayers and support of friends, family, and his fellowship pastor for keeping him alive.
”It was a period of severe depression for me. I lost hope and even attempted suicide twice. I’m just grateful that God raised people to help and pray for me. Some didn’t even know why they were praying for me, but those prayers kept me alive,” he said.
In 2018, Ini returned to the Microbiology department, the same program he had left years earlier. With the discipline and study habits he had developed in medical school, he excelled, graduating in 2024 with a strong 4.34 cumulative grade point average.
Though the journey took 12 years, Ini views his experience as a valuable life lesson.”It took me 12 years to earn a degree, but I like to see my experience as a preparation for life. I didn’t make it as a doctor, but I learned lessons I’ll never forget,” Ini said.
”It was the first time I’d ever failed anything in my life. I literally went from winning awards in school to struggling to pass. Thankfully, I didn’t drown,” he added.
Despite the setbacks, Ini remains optimistic about the future. “The Bible says, ‘The path of the just is like a shining light, shining brighter unto a perfect day,’ and I stand by that. I have no doubts about my tomorrow.
