AFRICA | Nigerian man who failed JAMB 3 times finally bags 4.55 first-class in Biotechnology, celebrates success.
A resilient Nigerian man named Temitope Alabi has demonstrated that perseverance and determination can lead to extraordinary achievements.
Despite failing the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination three times, Temitope defied the odds and graduated with a stellar 4.55 cumulative grade point, earning a first-class degree in Biotechnology from the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA).

”From 3.7 to 4.55 CGPA. Or should I say, from writing JAMB four times to graduating with First Class Honours in Biotechnology?” he said.
He admitted that his initial goal upon gaining admission was simply not to fail, saying, “I didn’t promise them a First Class at home.” However, things changed when he sought guidance from senior colleagues.
He recalls asking a colleague how she maintained her excellent academic performance and though her advice to study for at least five hours daily initially seemed daunting it later proved invaluable.
During the first half of his 10 semesters, Temitope was inconsistent, making the Dean’s List only twice. However, his perspective shifted after seeing a post from his secondary schoolmate who shared his journey from a 3.8 CGPA (with a carryover) to a 4.68 CGPA in his fourth year.
Inspired, Temitope reached out to Shedrack for advice, who encouraged him to aim for an average GPA of 4.8 going forward.
”He advised me to average a GPA of 4.8. Since then, my lowest GPA was 4.72, and I achieved a 5.0 GPA twice, finishing with a 4.55 CGPA,” he said. He attributes his success to identifying his strengths, developing resilience, cultivating self-discipline, and building confidence.
Beyond academics, Temitope served as the Class Governor for six years, which allowed him to hone his leadership skills. He was also socially active, embracing a well-rounded university experience.
Giving his takeaways from the academic journey to other scholars, Temitope advised them to seek guidance, understand themselves, set goals, and collaborate and able all, maintain a positive mindset.
Temitope expressed his gratitude to everyone who supported him throughout his journey and shared his excitement for the future. “I’m looking forward to the next phase and the opportunities ahead,” he said.
