CUSDS is the first-ever Columbia-wide scholarship, and it is also the world’s first scholarship of its kind, designed to support displaced students. Ohimai was one of 18 students selected globally for the inaugural cohort, chosen from over 1,200 applicants.
Before his journey to Columbia University, Ohimai earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and French (Combined Honours) from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria.
Ohimai’s path to Columbia, however, was shaped by personal challenges. After facing threats of arrest and accusations of treason by the Nigerian government due to his journalistic work as a TV anchor, he fled Nigeria and was granted asylum in the United States.
Despite the intense academic demands at Columbia, Ohimai expressed his gratitude. “The journey at Columbia University was intense, but I am deeply grateful to God for the grace to finish strong,” he said.
Ohimai also acknowledged the support he received from the Columbia Journalism School, the Global Center, his family, friends, and well-wishers who encouraged and supported him along the way.
