AFRICA | A determined Nigerian man wins PhD scholarship to US after three years of failed attempts, celebrates achievement
A determined Nigerian man named Oduwe Ugochukwu has finally won a PhD scholarship to study in the United States after three years of failed attempts.
He obtained his bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science at the University of Benin with a Second class grade in 2018. Narrating his story on Linkedin, Oduwe mentioned that two years after his undergraduate studies, he started applying for scholarships.
He said the application journey started during the 2021 application cycle and in the process, he received countless cold emails. Oduwe said he faced several rejections and challenges that almost made him give up on the process, but God came through.

Fortunately, Oduwe’s hardwork and determiation paid off. He was awarded a fully funded PhD scholarship at the University of Southern Mississippi, in the United States.
He described his journey as the beginning of a new era. He will be studying for his doctorate in the university’s Biological Sciences department focusing on Cell and Molecular Biology.
Oduwe expressed his gratitude to all the individuals who share scholarships on Twitter noting their posts were very helpful.
He also thanked a senior colleague from his alma mater who got admitted into the renowned Harvard University. Oduwe said his achievement reminded him that his dreams were valid and that he had to keep working hard.
Oduwe stated that his achievement is a dream come true for his looking at his journey from Benin City, Nigeria to a top research university in the United States.
In another story, Oluseye Oduyale finally bagged 300,000 dollars worth of scholarhip to Johns Hopkins University in the United States and eventually graduated as a Medical Doctor after suffering seven rejections.
