AFRICA | A young Nigerian man wins UK Commonwealth scholarship, bags masters degree with distinction at London University
A young Nigerian man named Oluwaferanmi Adeyemo has achieved a remarkable success by earning a master’s degree with distinction in International Communications and Development from City, University of London, thanks to a full scholarship from the Commonwealth.
Oluwaferanmi was awarded the prestigious Commonwealth Scholarship in 2020, which provided him with a fully-funded opportunity to study in the United Kingdom. This scholarship covers tuition fees, travel costs, and a monthly living stipend of £1,652.
The application period for the 2025 Commonwealth Masters Scholarship will open to eligible candidates from developing countries starting September 10, 2024. For more information on how to apply, check HERE.

Reflecting on his journey, Oluwaferanmi shared that he once focused on how others perceived his inadequacies, believing that nothing worthwhile could come from him.
He recounted a moment when he expressed his desire to emulate his late grandfather, the first Nigerian Professor of Accounting, only to be met with doubt about his potential.
Realizing that belief in himself and God was more important than being the smartest, Oluwaferanmi shifted his focus and dedicated himself to achieving his dreams. This determination helped him to achieve success in his academics.
He expressed heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to his achievements, including the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office and City, University of London.
Besides his academic learning, he emphasized that he learned valuable lessons in listening, organization, self-reflection, and taking full responsibility for his actions.
The Master of Arts degree marks Oluwaferanmi’s second master’s qualification. He began his academic journey in Nigeria, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication at Joseph Ayo Babalola University.
He then obtained his first master’s degree in Mass Communication at the University of Benin before securing the Commonwealth Scholarship for further studies in the UK.
Oluwaferanmi shared on Twitter that his inspiration to pursue the scholarship came from his mother, Solape Adeyemo, who is also a Commonwealth scholar. He said he is grateful for the gifts of a supportive family, dedicated lecturers, friends, and colleagues.
Reflecting on his journey, Oluwaferanmi noted his happiness with how far he has come and looks forward to the next big challenge. He is currently pursuing his PhD at Sheffield Hallam University in England.
