Nigerian Students suffer as all academic activities in the country shuts down

Academic activities in all Nigerian public universities have been shut down after lecturers in the country embarked on a strike action against the government.

The lecturers’ union popularly known as ASUU – Academic Staff Union of Universities, have been on strike since February 14, 2022 and expected to call it off today May 9, 2022 to allow the resumption of academic activities in the country.

According to a report by Intel Region, the union embarked on what was described as a 1 month warning strike in February with the objective of seeking the government’s attention to meet their demands.

The strike action was however extended for another two months after the initial “warning strike” failed to yield any result. The renewed two months strike ended today May 9, 2022 and was again extended for another 3 months which is expected to elapse by August 2022.

The demands of the Lecturers, according to ASUU, borders on the failure of the government to satisfactorily implement a Memorandum of Action (MoA) it signed with the Union in December 2020 on renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement.

The union also mentioned that the government should pay its withheld salaries (owed for over 20 months in some cases), and also Non-emittance of third-party deductions.

The fight between the government and the lecturers in the country has seen the shut down of universities for the past three months and will probably extend for another three months.

Undergraduates and Postgraduate students have all lamented their inability to carry out perfect research and make anything tangible out of the present system due to the strikes. More also, they complained about the loss of valuable time attributed to the strike.

While the strike has really affected students in the country, educational consultants have advised student to explore study abroad opportunities for those can afford it and scholarship opportunities for students that needs academic funding abroad.
