AFRICA | A young African man named Obed Asamoah Boateng overcame all adversity to graduate with a First-Class degree in Philosophy and Political Science from the University of Ghana.
Obed’s journey to success was filled with challenges. He grew up with uncertainty about his future, even before completing secondary school.
Despite excelling in the West African Senior School Certificate Exam (WASSCE) with 5As, 2Bs, and a C, he had no hope of furthering his education after high school due to financial difficulties.
After secondary school, Obed remained optimistic and was willing to embrace whatever opportunities came his way. He started working as a mobile money agent, hoping to save enough for his upkeep.

However, when things did not go as planned, a friend advised him to move to Accra in search of better opportunities.
Getting to Accra, Obed secured a job at a biscuit manufacturing company. Though the work was tedious, with long hours and night shifts, he persevered. But even with this job, one thought never left his mind—attending university.
In 2020, he bought the University of Ghana application forms and was eventually admitted the year after. However, this was just the beginning of another set of challenges.
Though his parents offered some support at the start, it was not enough to cover his expenses. With his savings exhausted and no external help, Obed decided to find a way to support himself.
To raise funds, he took on multiple jobs, including selling tissue paper, and working at his father’s mechanic shop during vacations while his colleagues were doing their internship. Eventually, he secured a job as a waiter at a restaurant in East Legon.
“When life hits you hard, you still have to plan your next move. The struggles, the pressure, the uncertainty—every day, I wondered how I would make it. But I knew one thing—giving up wasn’t an option,” he said.
Working as a waiter while studying was exhausting. Still, Obed remained determined. He also worked part-time as an usher at events and as a server at receptions to make extra income.
“Some nights, studying felt like a battle. Tired from working multiple jobs, but I couldn’t slack off. School was the reason I was here—texts, assignments, and exams were calling, but so was the hustle. It wasn’t easy, but I knew I couldn’t give up,” he said.
By his third year, Obed realized that working multiple jobs was affecting his grades. He decided to quit waitressing and instead started selling bread in his hostel, hawking them before lectures.
Despite all his struggles, he remained committed to his studies and was actively involved in extracurricular activities and school politics, serving as the Vice President of his department.
After years of hard work and sacrifice, Obed’s dedication paid off—he graduated with a First-Class degree. Reflecting on his journey, he described his achievement as a testament to resilience, perseverance, and faith.
“Looking back, the journey wasn’t easy. There were days I felt like giving up, nights I cried, and moments I doubted myself. But every struggle, every sacrifice, and every step was worth it,” he said.
To others facing difficult times, Obed encourages them to keep going. “Your dreams are valid. Your efforts will pay off. Your story is still being written. The struggles won’t last forever, but the victory will. Stay focused, stay resilient, stay prayerful, and trust the process,” he said.
As he moves forward, Obed’s vision is to continue learning, growing, and making an impact.
