A brilliant young Nigerian woman, Okeoghene Freda, has earned a Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Ibadan, graduating with a 4.52 cumulative grade point average.
Her outstanding performance not only secured her a place among the top graduates but also earned her the Dean’s Honours Award and recognition as the Best Graduating Female Student in the Department of Agricultural and Environmental Engineering.
She was also formally inducted into the engineering profession — a significant milestone that marks her transition from student to certified engineer.
Freda's Story and How She Did It
Freda’s journey at the University of ibadan did not begin wing high academic grade. In her first year, she recorded a 3.00 CGPA, borderline Second Class Upper.
For many students, that can either become a comfort zone or a quiet disappointment, but Freda made it a decision point. She chose not to remain there.
With steady, intentional, and layered responsibility moves, she transformed her academic journey. And by her second year, she recorded 3.18 CGPA, though an improvement, Freda knew it was not enough to secure a First Class.

She decided to get better in her third year. And this was not only academically. This year, she won as Departmental Vice President, made the Dean’s Honours List with a 3.84 GPA, and her final GPA climbed to 3.9.
As one would have thought, her leadership service did not serve as a distration rather it refined her academics. Then fourth year came with more pressure but Freda did not relent in excellence, she got better, scoring 3.45 grade and even made it to the Dean’s Honours List
Now, she was close to First Class territory but not quite there. Freda described this part as a borderline moment and one she saw as a motivation to push harder in final year..
While fighting to secure a First Class, she was simultaneously serving as a financial secretary, Nigerian Red Cross Society, University of Ibadan chapter and, chairman, Faculty of Technology Finalists’ Week
Also, she was going throruh the phase of completing her final-year project: Development of an IoT-Based Monitoring System for Environmental Conditions in Maize Storage
Freda recalled sleepless nights, moments of doubt and days when leadership responsibilities collided with academic deadlines. But she had made a promise to her 100-level self.
And she kept it. She graduated with First Class Honours and her excellence earned her the Best Graduating Female Student, Agricultural & Environmental Engineering, Dean’s Honours Award, Certificate of Honour from the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) and Certificate of Service from the Nigerian Red Cross Society
She also became the first First Class graduate in her bloodline, a generational milestone that carries both pride and responsibility.
For those currently in your 3.00 phase, Freda wants her journey to serve as a reminder for progress, efforts and belief compounds.
