Out of the 67 courses he did, this man earned 60As, 7Bs and went on to graduate with 4.90 first-class in Geology

AFRICA | A brilliant Nigerian scholar, Muizz Jimoh, has achieved an extraordinary academic feat at the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), earning a First-Class Honours degree in Geology and Mineral Science with a remarkable 4.90 Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA).

What makes his achievement even more outstanding is his consistency.  Out of 67 total courses, Muizz scored 60 As and 7 Bs, an incredible record in one of the most rigorous science disciplines at the university.

His performance earned him the Best Graduating Student of his Department and several other prestigious awards within the Faculty of Physical Sciences.

Muizz' Story and How He Did It

Muizz began his academic journey at UNILORIN in 2021, driven by a passion for the earth sciences and a goal to excel despite the technical rigor of his course.

Over four years, his commitment, discipline, and time management stood out as he maintained a steady academic success while taking on leadership and mentorship roles across campus.

He balanced multiple responsibilities. Muizz served as the General Secretary of the NMGS/NAPE Student Chapter UNILORIN, Financial Secretary of AMGEOS, a Student Mentor for the Division of Student Affairs (DSA), and a Volunteer Tutor in his department.

“It was demanding, but it helped me grow. I learned to stay consistent, even when things got tough,” he wrote on LinkedIn.

In another post shared on Twitter, Muizz offered insight into the simple but powerful system that guided his success. His approach combined routine, self-discipline, and active recall,  tools that helped him master each course efficiently.

Here’s how he outlined his study routine:

  • Early Start: Muizz often woke up at 5:30 a.m., studied for an hour, then prepared for the day.
  • Daily Focus: He ensured he studied at least one course intensively each day, following the syllabus closely.
  • Structured Timetable: He created a personal timetable — 8–10 a.m., 10–12 p.m., 12–2 p.m., 2–4 p.m., and 8–10 p.m.,  ensuring that he dedicated time blocks purely to study.
  • Exam Strategy: For CBT courses, he focused on course outlines, ticking off topics as he mastered them.
  • For theory-based courses, he practiced by setting his own questions and solving them like a lecturer would.
  • Night Routine: Before sleeping at 10 p.m., he revised everything he studied that day and recalled it again upon waking.

He advised students who are aiming for high grades like his to stay disciplined and consistent.

”Do what you say you’ll do. You’re an adult now — hold yourself accountable. There’s no single way to success. Be calm, prayerful, and focused,” he said.

Muizz’s academic excellence earned him several prestigious awards during his final year, including Scholar of the Year Merit Award from the UNILORIN student union, Human Personality and Scholar of the Year Award from his faculty and the Academic Icon and Executive of the Year Award from his department.

He expressed gratitude to his lecturers, mentors, and peers for their support, noting that every recognition symbolized “the countless nights of effort and the grace of God.”
