AMERICA | A 39-year-old former professional basketball player, Rajon Rondo, has finally fulfilled a long-held dream, graduating from the University of Kentucky, 20 years after he first left school to chase his basketball career.
Rajon began his academic journey at the University of Kentucky in 2004, where he quickly rose to prominence as a standout freshman. But just two years later, he left college early to enter the 2006 NBA Draft.
He was selected 21st overall and traded to the Boston Celtics, marking the start of a remarkable 16-year career in the National Basketball Association (NBA).
Though he went on to win two NBA championships and achieve global recognition, Rajon never forgot the promise he made to himself that one day, he would return to complete his education.

In May 2025, the promise was finally fulfilled as he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Communications from the same university where it all began.
His return was sponsored through the Cawood Ledford Scholarship, part of UK Athletics’ Post-Eligibility Program — a special initiative that allows former student-athletes to return and complete their degrees with full academic support.
Rondo played his last NBA season in 2022 and officially retired in 2024. Now, as he transitions into the next chapter of his life, he does so not just as an NBA legend, but as a proud college graduate.
The University of Kentucky shared his achievement on their social media handles, and fans across the world have applauded him for his determination and commitment — proving that no dream is too late to achieve, and that growth has no deadline.
