AMERICA | A brilliant young Nigerian boy, Rotimi Kukoyi, has achieved exceptional success after winning the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship, one of the world’s oldest and most respected postgraduate awards.
The scholarship will enable him to pursue two master’s degrees at the University of Oxford as part of the American Rhodes Scholar Class of 2026.
He was selected as one of just 32 American Rhodes Scholars from a competitive pool of 965 candidates nominated by their universities.
Rotimi's Story and How He Did It
Rotimi’s academic excellence began long before Oxford. In 2022, he made headlines after gaining admission into all of the top 15 universities in the United States following an extraordinary high school performance at Hoover High School, where he graduated as the best student.
He earned acceptance into multiple elite institutions, including Harvard University, Yale University, Stanford University, Johns Hopkins University, Vanderbilt University, and Duke University
The total scholarship offers reportedly exceeded $2 million. Despite these options, Rotimi chose the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, majoring in Health Policy and Management.
At UNC, Rotimi has maintained a perfect 4.00 GPA and is set to graduate in May 2026. Beyond academics, he has demonstrated strong leadership and service.
Rotimi was elected Senior Class President, completed his first marathon, and interned at the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, helping develop policies to advance value-based healthcare.
He also designed digital tools in Nigeria to support better healthcare decision-making and worked with the UNC Student Health Action Coalition to provide free healthcare services to uninsured residents
Before winning the Rhodes Scholarship, he was also named a 2025 Harry S. Truman Scholarship recipient — an award recognizing exceptional leadership and commitment to public service.
Reflecting on his achievement, Rotimi shared: “My first reaction was absolute disbelief. I never could have imagined being selected for the world’s oldest and most prestigious postgraduate award.”
“My second reaction was pure excitement: for the doors this will open, for the community I’ll be joining, and for the ways this experience will deepen my journey and commitment to transforming our healthcare system,” he added.
At Oxford, Rotimi plans to pursue Masters of Science in Health Improvement and Evaluation, and another M.Sc. in Evidence-Based Social Intervention and Policy Evaluation.
Rotimi’s long-term vision centers on transforming healthcare systems through policy reform, evidence-based interventions, and equitable access to care.
