AMERICA | Popular American-Jamaican reggae musician, Orville Richard Burrell, popularly known as Shaggy, has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Fine Arts by Brown University, one of the prestigious Ivy League institutions in the United States.
Shaggy earned the recognition in 2022, in celebration of his immense contribution to music, culture, military service, and philanthropy, particularly his influence in reggae, dancehall, and global pop culture.
In its citation, Brown University praised the Grammy-winning artist for his artistic excellence and philanthropic impact.
“Your style, your voice, and your influence on reggae and the genre’s growth in American pop culture cannot be overstated. You are recognised the world over for your success as a musician, your leadership, and dedicated philanthropy through the Shaggy Makes a Difference Foundation.”

Speaking to students at the event, Shaggy shared his life story, recalling his humble roots, and he always wished he enrolled in college
“I always wondered what the college experience would be like. I could never afford it. I come from a single-parent home, raised by my mother and grandmother in a small fishing village called Rae Town in downtown Kingston, Jamaica,” he said.
Despite financial challenges, Shaggy held on to his passion for music. But when things were not working out as hoped, he and his mother disagreed, and he took a bold decision to joined the U.S. Marines, hoping to benefit from the G.I. Bill, which provides education funding for veterans.
Shortly after completing his military service, Shaggy released a song, “Oh Carolina”, which became an instant hit in the UK and landed him a million-dollar deal with Virgin Records.
From there, his career soared, with global hits like “Mr. Boombastic”, “Angel”, and “It Wasn’t Me” placing him at the top of international charts.
Shaggy did not just make waves in music—he also made an impact through philanthropy, particularly with his Shaggy and Friends charity concert and Shaggy Makes a Difference Foundation, which supports children’s hospitals and education in Jamaica.
Sharing the achievement on Instagram, Shaggy thanked everyone who has supported him on his journey, especially his friends, colleagues, and kinsmen.
“I’d like to take the time to thank all my well-wishers, all my fellow Jamaicans across the globe who sent such warm messages and congratulations. I’m humbled, moved, and overwhelmed! Thank you,” he wrote.
