AMERICA | Kyle and Kendall Lewis, African-American twin brothers from Slidell, have achieved a remarkable success, graduating together from Louisiana State University (LSU) Health Sciences Center, United States both earning their Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degrees.
For the Lewis twins, education and excellence have always gone hand in hand. From kindergarten to high school and college, they have walked every academic path side by side, and now, they have crossed yet another finish line together in medical school.
The Lewis Twins' Story and How They Did It
Born in Atlanta in 1995 and raised in New Orleans, Kyle and Kendall’s journey began with humble beginnings but extraordinary promise.
Their academic excellence earned them scholarships to attend Isidore Newman School through the Fertel Foundation Scholarship (Randy Fertel).
After which they proceesed to the Louisiana State University where they graduated summa cum laude, with Kyle majored in Pre-Medicine and Kendall in Kinesiology. Though they initially planned to pursue separate paths, life and purpose brought them back together

After completing their undergraduate degrees, the twins worked as medical assistants at Urgent Care Eleven in New Orleans, owned by Dr. Stephen Jones, an African-American physician who would become their mentor and role model.
“Growing up, I didn’t see many Black male doctors. Meeting Dr. Jones changed everything, it showed me that someone who looks like me can wear that white coat proudly and make a difference,” Kyle recalled.
Inspired by his mentorship and the desire to serve their community, both brothers applied and were accepted into LSU Health Shreveport Medical School, marking the beginning of another shared chapter.
Their time in medical school was not without challenges, but having each other made all the difference. “It’s been a blessing to go through this whole journey with my twin,” Kendall shared.
“From the late-night study sessions to the long shifts, we motivated each other to keep pushing. Our parents taught us about togetherness, and that has truly kept us going,” he added.
Their parents, Kevin and Tresa Lewis, both educators and the first in their families to graduate from a four-year university (University of New Orleans), expressed their pride in them.
They said their sons’ success represents the fruit of faith, focus, and family unity. The Lewis twins’ graduation, however, is not the end of their story — it’s the beginning of a new chapter.
Both brothers matched into the same Family Medicine residency program in Fort Worth, Texas, where they will continue to train together for the next few years.
“Hopefully, we’ll one day open our own family or sports medicine clinic. “That’s our dream, to keep practicing together and serve the communities that raised us,” Kendall said with a smile.
Beyond their personal success, Kyle and Kendall are deeply committed to representation and mentorship. They believe that visibility matters, that young African-American boys need to see professionals who look like them thriving in medicine.
“I hope to be the next Dr. Jones for another aspiring student. Representation fuels motivation. When young people see us, we want them to say, ‘If they did it, I can too” Kendall added.
