AFRICA | 10-year-old Graham Shema, from Uganda, has stunned the world with his extraordinary knowledge of aviation and flying skills. His brilliance and passion for flight earned him a scholarship from tech billionaire and expert Elon Musk.
Fondly nicknamed “Captain”, Graham was allowed to co-pilot to another state at the young age of nine and he did excellently.
Graham Story and How He Did It
Graham’s curiosity about planes started unexpectedly. At the age of three, a police helicopter flew so low over his grandmother’s house in Kampala that the force blew off the roof.
The incident triggered an endless stream of questions: “How do planes work? Why do they fly? What makes them move?,” according to his mother
Graham’s mother, Shamim Mwanaisha, a travel agent, recalls how her son’s fascination only deepened over time. To nurture his passion, she enrolled him in a local aviation academy
By the age of nine, Graham had already completed five months of aviation theory at home, learning aircraft parts, aviation vocabulary, and flight principles. His mother then paid for practical lessons, and soon Graham was sitting in the cockpit of a Cessna 172.
Within two months, he successfully flew three times as a co-pilot before the pandemic temporarily grounded his practice. “I felt like a bird flying up,” Graham said, recalling the thrill of his first flight.
His exceptional knowledge caught the attention of instructors and officials. During one lesson at Entebbe International Airport, he was asked to explain how a Bombardier CRJ900 engine works.
With confidence, Graham broke down the process step by step, impressing even seasoned aviators. A lover of math and science, Graham dreams of becoming both a pilot and an astronaut.
His ultimate goal is to travel to Mars with Elon Musk, which is already coming to fulfillment. News of Graham’s brilliance spread quickly across Uganda and beyond.
He has been interviewed on local television, received invitations from the German ambassador and Uganda’s transport minister, and captured the admiration of thousands on social media.
But his biggest recognition came from his role model himself, Elon Musk, founder of SpaceX.
Impressed by the boy’s knowledge and ambition, Elon Musk awarded him a scholarship to support his aviation and space studies, bringing Graham one step closer to his dream of exploring space.
For now, the young genius continues to immerse himself in aviation videos, simulations, and theory lessons, while waiting to resume practical training.
“I like Elon Musk because I want to learn with him about space, to go with him in space, and also to get a handshake,” Graham said.
