AFRICA | A brilliant 13-year-old African-American boy named Joshua Suddith, has rewritten history by earning admission into the prestigious Morehouse College, two full years younger than Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who enrolled at age 15.
Joshua’s extraordinary achievement is not just a record-breaking moment; it is the continuation of a lifelong pattern of academic excellence and remarkable intellectual gifts.
Joshua's Story and How She Did It
Joshua’s journey began unusually early. At nine months old, he was already speaking, and by 18 months, he was reading. His brilliance continued to unfold as he grew: at age three, he wrote his first book, a milestone that hinted at the extraordinary academic path ahead.
His life took a meaningful turn at age four when he first learned about Martin Luther King Jr.’s early enrollment at Morehouse College. Inspired, he quietly made a promise to himself:
He would break that record one day.
Joshua remained true to that childhood vow. His academic journey moved at a intense pace. He skipped from 2nd to 5th grade, then from 5th to 7th, and from 7th to 11th grade.
By 12, he had already accumulated 27 college credit hours at Augusta Technical College through dual enrollment, maintaining an impressive 3.88 GPA.
His brilliance attracted attention far and wide. Before turning 13, Joshua received over 20 college acceptance letters from institutions such as: Jackson State University, Tennessee State University, Shaw University and Miles College.
Yet, his heart stayed faithful to his childhood dream — Morehouse College, a historical pillar among HBCUs. On his 13th birthday, Joshua achieved his childhood goal.
Morehouse College offered him admission, making him the youngest person ever to be accepted into the university, officially breaking MLK’s longstanding record.
Joshua’s journey is also tied to a deeply emotional beginning. His mother, Chaundra Suddith, underwent a rare in-utero surgery at just 19 weeks pregnant — a procedure that ensured her son’s survival. To her, Joshua is a miracle in every sense of the word.
Despite his academic gifts, Joshua remains relatable and grounded. He loves basketball and enjoys playing the piano, striking a healthy balance between genius and everyday teenage life.
Joshua has already been awarded a merit scholarship to Hills Academy, and his family is hopeful for additional full-ride scholarship opportunities as he prepares to navigate college funding.
His accomplishments have earned widespread recognition from Morehouse alumni, The Black Man Can Inc., and CBCA/Robert Mason.
While Joshua has officially secured his place at Morehouse, he plans to defer for one year to complete high school properly. When he finally steps onto the Morehouse campus, he intends to major in International Relations, driven by a desire to make a meaningful global impact.
Reflecting on his achievement, Joshua shared: “I am driven by a passion for learning and making a positive impact in the world… Whether it’s excelling academically or inspiring others, I am committed to growing and improving.”
