This 18-year-old boy graduated high school with 9 distinctions, earns acceptance from Harvard University

AFRICA | An exceptional 18-year-old boy named Menzi Bongwe has achieved a remarkable academic milestone after graduating from St John’s College, Johannesburg, South Africa, with nine distinctions in his matric examinations.

His outstanding performance has earned him admission to the prestigious Harvard University in the United States, where he will study Economics.

Menzi's Story and How She Did It

Menzi, a teenager from Kempton Park, recorded an impressive 91.8% aggregate in his 2025 matric results. He earned distinctions in English Home Language, isiZulu First Additional Language, Life Orientation, Mathematics, Dramatic Arts, History, Physical Sciences, as well as Further Studies in Extended Mathematics and Further Studies in English.

Inspired by his father, who became the first in their family to study abroad and earned a degree in Industrial Psychology in the United States, Menzi set his sights early on pursuing higher education in America.

That vision has now become reality with his acceptance into Harvard, where he plans to explore economics and contribute to policy solutions that can drive national development.

While awaiting his departure to the US in August, Menzi says he plans to give back by volunteering to tutor current matric students. He also intends to stay active and continue personal development as he prepares for the next chapter of his life.

“Economics is motivated by my strength in numbers and English. I enjoy combining both, and I’m interested in developing economic policies that can help grow the country,” he said.

Beyond academics, Menzi was also selected as a Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) nominee, an intensive leadership and academic enrichment program for outstanding African secondary school students.

Reflecting on his success, he attributed his results to discipline, time management, and balance.

“It was nerve-wracking waiting for the results. I had butterflies in my stomach. But when I finally saw them, it was a huge relief—it made me realise that all the hard work paid off,” he said.

Advising current matric students, Menzi encouraged them to stay focused and seize every opportunity. “Everything you desire is achievable if you put your mind to it and remain intentional about your goals,” he said.
