This 22-year-old Lady earned Nursing degree with honors, wins merit award

A 22-year-old lady named Rhea Jewan has graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Health Sciences in Nursing at the Durban University of Technology(DUT), where she also received the prestigious Dean’s Merit Award in recognition of her outstanding academic performance.

Her achievement stands as a remarkable milestone in one of the university’s most demanding programmes, marking the completion of years defined by discipline, sacrifice, and resilience in a field where both academic excellence and emotional strength are essential.

Jewan's Story and How She Did It

Jewan began her journey into nursing shortly after completing her matric in 2021. Driven by a desire to build a meaningful career in healthcare, she enrolled  into the nursing programme at DUT’s Indumiso Campus after passing the required entry assessment.

However, her path was not immediately stable. At the early stage of her studies, uncertainty around funding threatened her ability to continue, placing her academic future in doubt.

It was a moment that tested her determination before financial support was eventually secured, allowing her to fully commit to her studies.

Once enrolled, Jewan was immediately introduced to the intensity of nursing education—lectures, continuous assessments, and demanding hospital placements that required both technical competence and emotional resilience.

She also studied during a transitional period in South African nursing education, as her cohort became one of the first to train under the revised South African Nursing Council qualification framework.

This change introduced new academic structures and expectations, requiring both students and lecturers to adapt quickly.

Despite the uncertainty, she embraced the process, learning to balance academic pressure with real-life clinical responsibilities in hospital settings. Her training exposed her to patient care situations that demanded maturity, compassion, and quick decision-making.

Throughout her journey, she also committed herself to DUT’s ENVISION2030 Living Values Framework, particularly embracing honesty and accountability.

After years of consistent effort, Jewan graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Health Sciences in Nursing, earning recognition as one of the top-performing students in her programme.

For her, the achievement represents more than academic success, it is the outcome of perseverance through financial uncertainty, academic pressure, and a demanding professional training environment.

Looking ahead, she hopes to further her education through postgraduate studies and eventually specialise in fields such as midwifery, trauma nursing, or peri-operative nursing.

Reflecting on her journey, she encourages aspiring nurses to pursue the profession with genuine passion and compassion, emphasizing that nursing is not just a career path, but a lifelong commitment to caring for others.
