A 28-year-old lady named Mumuni Napari Hanifa has made history by becoming the youngest woman to earn a PhD in Statistics from her city.
Hanifa obtained her doctorate degree in Applied Statistics from the University of Developmental Studies at the remarkable age of 28, while many of her peers are still navigating undergraduate studies.
She is the youngest woman from Tamale, Ghana, to earn a doctoral degree in Applied Statistics. Sharing her achievement on LinkedIn, Hanifa described her success as unimaginable, reflecting on her journey from being a little girl with a fear of mathematics to earning a PhD.

“As I reflect on my academic journey, I can’t help but express gratitude to Allah for the blessing of good health that has enabled me to achieve so much. From being a little girl with a fear of mathematics to earning a PhD in applied statistics, the journey feels surreal and unimaginable,” she said.
Hanifa attributes her success to her supervisors, who have guided her throughout her doctoral program and served as mentors since her undergraduate days. She said their support and guidance have been invaluable in shaping her career.
She began her undergraduate studies at the University of Developmental Studies, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Statistics. She then pursued a master’s degree in Mathematics at the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences in Ghana.
Additionally, Hanifa expressed gratitude to the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) for sponsoring her PhD studies, which enabled her to develop her skills and pursue her academic goals.
She also thanked her parents, parents-in-law, and her husband for their unwavering support and prayers throughout her academic journey.
Looking ahead, Hanifa is open to postdoctoral opportunities that align with her research interests. She is excited about the next chapter in her career and looks forward to making significant contributions to the field.
Dr. Hanifa currently serves as a lecturer of statistics at Tamale Technical University in Ghana.
