AFRICA | A 28-year-old South African scholar, Simo Mthethwa, has defied personal tragedy and difficult circumstances to achieve remarkable academic success, earning a PhD in Mathematics from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), South Africa.
His academic journey is one defined by perseverance, discipline, and resilience, even in the face of devastating loss.
Simo's Story and How He Did It
Simo grew up in a modest village in South Africa, where opportunities were limited, and success stories were rare. Yet, even in those humble surroundings, his passion for education began to take root.
From an early age, he saw education not as a privilege but as a path to a better future. In classrooms where resources were scarce but determination was abundant, he discovered his love for mathematics, seeing it as his refuge and hope.
At home, life was equally demanding. As one of fourteen siblings, responsibility came early. He was always faced with the reality of survival, but through it all, his greatest supporter was his mother, who believed deeply in his potential.
But unfortunately, he faced tragedy before his milestone. A day before his first graduation ceremony, Simo lost his mother, who never had the chance to see him walk across the stage.
This loss threatened to derail everything he had worked for. Instead, it strengthened his resolve. In his grief, he made a promise to continue his journey in her honor.
However, transitioning to the University of KwaZulu-Natal was overwhelming. Unlike other students, who arrived with better preparation and resources, Simo relied solely on discipline and determination.
He had to follow up with a long night of study as mathematics grew increasingly complex. And there were times doubt and isolation surfaced, but quitting was never an option.
In 2012, he earned his bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Statistics at UKZN, and the following year, he also earned an honors degree in Mathematics from the same university.
His academic journey did not stop there. Simo proceeded to re-enroll at UKZN for his master’s, and he earned the MSc in mathematics in 2015. Each qualification represented more than academic success; it was proof that persistence could overcome circumstance.
He went on to enroll for his PhD, but the greatest challenge came with his doctoral research. A PhD demanded patience, creativity, and intellectual endurance. Years of research and revisions followed as his work in topology and frame theory gradually gained recognition.
In 2019, at just 28 years old, Simo achieved a historic milestone by earning his PhD in Mathematics, completing a dissertation titled Perfect Compactifications of Frames.
He became one of the youngest Black mathematicians in KwaZulu-Natal to earn a PhD, marking a significant academic achievement.
After completing his doctorate, he entered academia, working as a lecturer and later a senior lecturer. However, Simo soon noticed a troubling reality: many students viewed mathematics as intimidating and inaccessible.
Determined to change this narrative, he founded Mthethwamatics, a non-profit organization aimed at making mathematics relatable and accessible.
Through school visits, seminars, mentorship, and teaching programs, the initiative connects mathematics to real-life opportunities and encourages learners to see the subject as a tool for empowerment rather than fear.
