AFRICA | 36-year-old, Dr. Chukwumaobi Oluah, a brilliant Nigerian scholar, has achieved remarkable success by becoming a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Vrije Universiteit Brussels in Belgium.
He achieved this rare academic feat only three years after earning his PhD. Dr. Oluah’s appointment was shared by a close friend on X (formerly Twitter), who celebrated his remarkable rise through the academic ranks.
“Today, my dear friend Chukwumaobi Oluah has been made a Professor at Vrije Universiteit Brussels. He is also a Post-Doc at the Eindhoven University of Technology. He’s a Mechanical Engineer — and just 36 years old!” the post read.

Oluah's Story and How He Did It
Chukwumaobi began his academic journey at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2012. His passion for innovation and problem-solving pushed him to further his studies, and by 2018, he bagged his Master’s degree at the same university.
Following his master’s program, Oluah quickly built a reputation as a dedicated researcher and mechanical design expert, contributing to several engineering projects in Nigeria before deciding to pursue further studies abroad.
In 2019, he enrolled for a PhD in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa, where his research focused on sustainable energy systems and advanced modeling techniques.

His academic excellence shone through, and by 2022, he had successfully earned his doctorate, marking the beginning of a rapid global ascent.
After completing his PhD, Dr. Oluah joined Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland, as a Research Associate between 2022 and 2023. There, he worked on modeling approaches to upscaling smart local energy systems, an area critical to global energy transitions.
His intellectual curiosity led him further into Europe, where he became a Visiting Scholar at Northumbria University, United Kingdom, before taking on a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands.
Through these international research experiences, he deepened his expertise in renewable energy modeling, sustainable engineering systems, and smart infrastructure.
In 2024, just three years after earning his PhD, his academic brilliance and research contributions earned him a professorship appointment at Vrije Universiteit Brussels — one of Belgium’s most respected research universities.
