A dedicated 46-year-old man named Leon Smith has been honored for his years of selfless service after being named the 2026 National Teacher of the Year in the United States.
His story is a reminder that great teachers do more than teach subjects, they build confidence, unlock potential, and shape lives for decades.
Leon's Story and How He Did It
Leon, a high school history teacher in Pennsylvania, earned the prestigious recognition for helping students discover their strengths, think critically, and become active members of their communities.
He has spent his entire 25-year teaching career at Haverford High School, where he teaches Advanced Placement U.S. History and African American Studies.
Leon describes himself as a “warm demander”, a teacher who sets high expectations while surrounding students with love, support, and encouragement.
He believes one of a teacher’s greatest gifts is helping students see abilities in themselves they may not yet recognize.“An adult can tell you that they see something in you that maybe you didn’t see in yourself. I love to do that for students,” he said.
Leon begins each class with community-building conversations that help students connect before lessons begin.
In one class, he asked students to share songs that made them happy. From there, the lesson transitioned into deeper discussions about history, society, and when nations should intervene in wars abroad.
His teaching style blends emotional intelligence with academic rigor. Beyond classroom, Leon has impacted deeply. Each year, he takes students to the Pennsylvania State Capitol where they meet lawmakers, ask questions, and learn how public policy affects their lives.
These experiences help students build confidence, communication skills, and civic awareness. He was also praised for helping introduce the first-ever AP African American Studies course at his school, ensuring students learn history through multiple perspectives.
His classroom is built on inclusion, empathy, and the belief that education can transform lives. As the 2026 National Teacher of the Year, Leon will spend the next year representing educators across America and serving as an ambassador for the teaching profession.
He plans to use the platform to celebrate the life-changing role teachers play in shaping future generations. “There’s nothing like seeing a student gain confidence in themselves after receiving words of encouragement from you,” he said.
