After 40 years of treating patients for free, this 66-year-old doctor gets rewarded $100000 gift for his service

AFRICA | After 40 years of treating patients free of charge, Dr. Michael Zollicoffer has finally earned the reward from the community he served tirelessly.

Famously known as Dr. Z, his journey is a powerful reminder that a life of service often creates its own circle of kindness. He openly admits he’s “rich in joy, not in money,” because he never cared about building wealth, but his joy came from helping people.

“I just love people. If you say you got a rash, I’m going to find you, because I love a bump on your head,” he said during an interview with CBS News.  This infectious spirit became his trademark,  the reason patients felt safe, valued, and seen

Dr. Z 's Story and How He Did It

From the very beginning of his practice, Dr. Z made one simple rule: no one would be denied care because they could not pay.

“Forget that dollar bill. If you walk in that door, you will be seen. You bring your grandma with you, I’ll see her too,” he would say.

And his patients confirm this wholeheartedly. “He is unbelievable — you will never meet another person like him,” patient Lita Johnson said.

Beyond his generosity, Dr. Z sacrificed his personal life for his community. For almost 40 years, he never took a real vacation. He gave patients full access to him — 24 hours a day, seven days a week, all year long. Some even had his personal cellphone number.

But Dr Z also had his own battle. Recently, he received shocking news that he had been diagnosed with two separate cancers — renal and rectal. Yet even then, his response was brave and hopeful: “I don’t give up,” he said.

What made the situation worse was the discovery that he had no insurance due to a paperwork failure with his Medicare plan. After several administrative errors, he had no way to pay for the radiation treatments necessary to save his life.

Now this is the time that his good service was rewarded. His community decided to come together and help him. The same people he treated for decades rallied to return the kindness.

“I’m like, let’s fight — what can we do?” Johnson said. “Dr. Z will not give up on you, so we damn sure ain’t giving up on him,” patient Ray Beverly added.“Whatever needs to be done to save Dr. Z, we’re going to do it — collectively,” Robinson said.

And they meant it. A crowdfunding campaign was launched, and the response was overwhelming.

Nearly a thousand people contributed, raising over $100,000 to ensure Dr. Z received the treatment he needed.

Today, his prognosis is good. His insurance has been restored. And in true Dr. Z fashion, he plans to return any remaining crowdfunding funds to the community.

In a moment of deep reflection, Dr Z shared: “I’m thankful that I got cancer, because I am the happiest man on the planet. What we’ve shown here is what humanity is about — giving. I can’t make it without them, nor can they make it without me.”
