This 80-year-old grandmother enrolled at US university to learn about computer, bags associates degree

AMERICA | An 80-year-old grandmother named Beatrice Lillie, has defied age limits by graduating from Houston Community College (HCC), United States, with an Associate Degree in Business Administration.

She pursued the milestone primarily to learn about computers and set an example for younger generations.

“I would not have believed it, I don’t think—although we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us,” Lillie said, recalling how she and her classmates encouraged one another through the journey.

Beatrice's Story and How She Did It

Beatrice, who has lived a life as a secretary with the Harris County Probation Department, a cosmetologist, and later the owner of an answering-service business, earning a college degree had always eluded her.

“I did it to set an example for my children and grandchildren. If grandma can do it, I can do it,” she said.

She completed the associate degree in four years, and today, most of her grandchildren are enrolled in college. Her decision to return to school was encouraged by a friend, Merline Williams, who had also gone back to school later in life.

“I had to ask my granddaughter to help fill out my college application,” Beatrice admitted. She also noted that learning computer skills was one of her main motivations

Beyond business administration, she says her studies exposed her to diversity and art appreciation, broadening her worldview and sharpening her mind.

Her determination inspired many of her classmates, particularly younger women who saw her as proof that it is never too late to learn. Now computer-savvy, Beatrice spends much of her time volunteering with seniors at the Northeast Houston Multi-Service Center.

While she has no plans to pursue a new career, citing physical limitations, Beatrice states that her mind is sharper than ever. She continues to remain active in community service and church work.

Her graduation was attended by her grandchildren, though one person she wished could have been there was her late mother. “I think she really would have been proud,” Lillie said.
