UK | An inspiring 81-year-old woman named Ann Gabb has proven that it is never too late to chase a dream.
Despite battling terminal blood cancer and enduring heartbreaking personal losses, she successfully earned a Bachelor’s degree in Arts and Humanities from The Open University, United Kingdom.
Her journey reflects remarkable resilience, lifelong learning, and the power of determination.
Ann's Story and How She Did It
Ann had always dreamed of earning a university degree, but life’s responsibilities stood in the way.
When she finally enrolled at The Open University in 2020, she was eager to experience the joy of academic pursuit, even though she knew she would be studying while managing complex health challenges.
Midway through her studies, Ann received the devastating news of her blood cancer diagnosis. Even then, she refused to give up. She balanced coursework with treatments, fatigue, and the emotional strain of her condition—determined to complete what she started.
She described her illness simply as “a bit unfortunate,” acknowledging that there was no cure but choosing to continue her treatment with grace and courage.

Her journey was also marked by unimaginable grief. Ann lost her husband, Trevor Gabb, during her program. Shortly before completing her degree, she lost her daughter, Wendy Jones, who had been battling a long-term illness.
Reflecting on her daughter, Ann said softly, “She was amazing. She was ill for a very long time. We miss her.”
Her son, Andrew Gabb, also grieving the loss of his sister, expressed profound pride in his mother’s achievement. “I’m extremely proud. My mum is humble and doesn’t like attention, but there’s no way she was escaping this one,” she said.
Ann attended her graduation ceremony at Birmingham’s prestigious Symphony Hall, where more than 2,000 people gathered. “It was incredible. I’ve never seen anything like it. When they called her name, the whole hall erupted,” Andrew shared.
Although naturally shy, Ann hopes that her achievement will inspire others. especially older adults and people facing health challenges—to believe in their potential.
“I’m hoping that other people will realise you can do it at any age. You don’t have to be a 20-year-old,” she said.
