AFRICA | An 86-year-old man named James Acquah has graduated from Central University with a Bachelor of Arts in Theology, proving that one can achieve their dream no matter the age.
Unlike many graduates who begin their academic journeys in youth, James returned to school later in life after decades of experience and personal reflection
James' Story and How He Did It
His decision was inspired by what he believes was a divine instruction to become a “learned evangelist” — someone equipped with deep theological knowledge to effectively minister to secondary school students.
Having previously studied Sociology, he felt compelled to formally deepen his understanding of Scripture in order to fulfill that assignment.
Though the decision came with discomfort and challenges, he embraced it wholeheartedly, describing his intelligence as a gift from God that must be developed regardless of age.
His academic journey was not without obstacles. During exams in 2020, a delay in school fee payment from his child abroad led to a painful incident.
While completing the final question of an exam paper, an accounts officer entered the hall demanding proof of payment. Despite his plea for patience, the officer seized and crumpled both his question paper and answer sheet.
“It was painful. I was on the last question, about to finish. But I told myself that nothing God has assigned me to do will be stopped by any human action,” he recalled.
Despite that setback, James remained steadfast. At 86, he attended lectures faithfully, completed assignments diligently, and actively participated in class discussions. His lecturers described him as focused, thoughtful, and deeply committed .
During the university’s 24th Congregation Ceremony, he was honored as the “Most Resilient Graduate,” in recognition of his perseverance, humility, and unwavering pursuit of growth.
For Rev. Acquah, education at his age is not merely an achievement but part of a larger mission.
“I am not a roadside evangelist,” he said. “God told me to be a learned evangelist so I can guide the next generation with excellence.”
