AFRICA | A brilliant Nigerian lady named Maryam Lawal has achieved an extraordinary academic milestone, graduating as a double first-class lawyer and emerging as one of the best students in the history of the Nigerian Law School.
Her story is a powerful blend of discipline, resilience, and scholarly excellence.
Maryam's Story and How She Did It
Maryam’s higher academic journey began in 2017, when she gained admission into the Lagos State University (LASU) to study Law.
She pursued a combined LLB in Common and Islamic Law, and despite being deeply involved in student leadership and extracurricular activities, she maintained exceptional academic standards.
In 2023, she graduated with a First Class degree, marking the first phase of her double first-class success. As required for all law graduates in Nigeria, Maryam proceeded to the Nigerian Law School, where her pursuit of excellence continued.
In a LinkedIn post, she shared that entry into Law School was supported by the prestigious Reginald Aziza Law School Scholarship, a competitive award given to promising students.
This scholarship became a major contributor to her academic progression and was a significant recognition of her potential.
Maryam began Law School in January 2024, and she described that period as one of the most intense phases of her academic life, defined by long study hours, a demanding curriculum, moments of self-doubt, fatigue, and mental exhaustion.
Yet through all these challenges, she remained committed. And her hard work paid off beyond expectations.
She graduated with a First Class in the Barrister-at-Law (BL) program and was formally called to the Nigerian Bar as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. But her achievements did not stop there.
In a national class of 7,134 students, Maryam emerged as the Best Graduating Female Student, Second Overall Best Graduating student in Nigeria, and winner of eight academic awards, including the Best Student in Corporate Law Practice.
Reflecting on her journey on LinkedIn, Maryam expressed gratitude to God and shared how the scholarship, the intense training, and the challenges she faced shaped her into a more resilient and purpose-driven individual.
She described the experience as a journey of growth, perseverance, and divine help.
As she steps into the next chapter of her legal career, Maryam says she is filled with anticipation and is ready for the great exploits she hopes to accomplish in the legal profession, God willing.
