AMERICA | A brilliant young student, Tina Chawira, has secured a full scholarship to study for a bachelor’s degree at the prestigious Harvard University in the United States.
This remarkable achievement makes her the first person in her family to attend a university in the United States, and upon her graduation in 2030, she will become the first graduate in her family.
Her journey is especially inspiring, as she rose from humble beginnings to gain admission into one of the world’s top universities.
Tina's Story and How She Did It
After completing her GCSEs at Carlton Keighley in the United Kingdom in 2024, Tina moved on to pursue her A-level and pre-college studies at New College Bradford.
There, she studied Politics, Economics, Sociology, Performing and Production Arts, and completed an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ).
During this period, she expanded her global exposure by participating in a World Challenge trip to Nepal and attending the Sutton Trust Fulbright US Programme summer school, which gave her valuable insight into studying in the United States.
After completing her A-levels, Tina earned a fully funded scholarship to Harvard University, where she will study Government and East Asian Studies. The scholarship covers her tuition, living expenses, and travel costs.

Speaking about the opportunity, Tina described it as life-changing.
“Harvard has a commitment to social mobility that mirrors New College Bradford and is an institution that will grant me opportunities I could never have imagined having access to before,” she said.
She also expressed excitement about paving the way for other students from her community, noting that she is the first student from her college to gain admission into Harvard.
Sharing her joy on LinkedIn, Tina reflected on how significant the achievement is for her and her family.
“From being the first in my direct family to even step foot in the US to being the first admitted into a US university — let alone Harvard — this year has been a journey unlike any other,” she wrote.
She credited programmes like the US-UK Fulbright Commission, Sutton Trust Programme, and the support of mentors and family members, especially her sister, for helping her believe in her potential and remain confident throughout the application process.
