A brilliant young lady named Janaya Nelson has achieved remarkable success, graduating as a medical doctor from Meharry Medical College in the United States.
With this milestone, she continues a powerful family legacy, becoming the fourth doctor in her family to graduate from the same institution. Her story is one of both legacy and personal purpose.
Janaya's Story and How She Did It
Janaya’s journey into medicine began with a solid academic foundation. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Spelman College in 2019, where she developed her interest in science and healthcare.
Determined to deepen her knowledge, she proceeded to Hampton University, where she completed a Master of Medical Science degree in 2021.
With both academic preparation and a clear vision, she advanced to Meharry Medical College to pursue a Doctor of Medicine(MD) degree, officially stepping into the path her family had long established.

Janaya is a fourth-generation student at Meharry Medical College, following in the footsteps of her father, Artie C. Nelson, and her mother, Stacy Haynes Nelson, who both earned their MD in 1984, and her sister, Kamaria Nelson Johnson, M.D., who earned hers in 2017.
Growing up in a family of physicians, she was surrounded by examples of discipline, compassion, and service, values that shaped her journey into medicine. However, her decision was not based on legacy alone.
Inspired by her personal experience with alopecia, Janaya developed a passion for dermatology, a field that focuses not only on treating skin conditions but also on restoring patients’ confidence and overall well-being.
After years of intensive study and clinical training, she has now reached another major milestone.
In her final year of medical school, Janaya successfully matched for residency training in dermatology at George Washington University in the United States, an achievement that marks the transition from medical student to practicing physician in training.
As she steps into the next phase of her medical career, she carries forward not just a family name but a commitment to making a meaningful impact in the lives of her future patients.
