A resilient and determined woman, Mona Dixon, has overcome an incredibly difficult childhood to achieve remarkable academic success, earning a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree, and a PhD by the age of 27.
Her inspiring journey shows how determination, resilience, and faith can transform even the most challenging beginnings into a story of success.
Mona's Story and How She Did It
Mona’s childhood was a difficult one. For much of her early life, she and her family lived on the streets and in homeless shelters, often moving from one temporary place to another just to have somewhere to sleep.
Until she was about 12 years old, Mona sometimes slept on cardboard boxes or in dumpsters, using whatever little shelter she could find. Her mother would cover Mona and her siblings with her jacket to keep them warm during cold nights.
Despite these harsh conditions, education remained a priority. Mona often studied under streetlights, completing her homework outside because she had no proper place to read.
Sometimes, she and her siblings had to get ready for school in gas station bathrooms before heading to class.
They even hanged on public transport because they could not afford the fare, trying to avoid security officers to prevent fines.
Growing up under such difficult circumstances forced Mona to mature quickly. At a young age, she took on part-time jobs to help support her family while also focusing on her studies.
The experience taught her responsibility, resilience, and gratitude. She later explained that her childhood struggles shaped her mindset and gave her the strength to keep moving forward no matter the circumstances.
Mona credits many people who believed in her potential and helped shape her journey. One of them was her first-grade teacher, Ms. Mayor, who recognized her academic potential and moved her directly to third grade.
Another mentor, Ms. Lissner, helped channel Mona’s energy into positive activities, while her high school basketball coach, Mr. Morton, guided and encouraged her like a father.
She also received support from organizations such as the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and UMOM New Day Centers, which provided resources and opportunities that helped her grow.
Mona’s leadership and determination soon began attracting national attention. At just 17 years old, she was named National Youth of the Year by the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
Her achievement led to a special recognition by Barack Obama at the Oval Office. She was later appointed as the youngest member of a U.S. Presidential Community Service Committee, serving alongside other distinguished leaders.
By the age of 18, Mona was also named one of the “Most Influential Black Women” by Essence Magazine, appearing alongside global figures like Oprah Winfrey and Michelle Obama.
Her achievements also earned her over $100,000 in scholarships, media features, and opportunities to work with prominent personalities.
Mona later pursued higher education at Arizona State University, studying at Barrett, The Honors College and the W.P. Carey School of Business, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in Business Management.
She went on to complete her master’s degree, continuing her academic journey with determination. At the age of 27, Mona earned a PhD in Organizational Leadership from Grand Canyon University.
During this period, she was also running the Inspired by Mona Foundation and traveling globally as an international motivational speaker, inspiring young people with her story.
Reflecting on her journey, Mona explained that her motivation initially came from the desire to help her family live a better life.
Today, her purpose is much bigger. She now focuses on guiding young people, encouraging them to overcome challenges, and helping them believe in their potential to change the world.
Mona also expressed deep gratitude to her mother, whom she described as a strong and resourceful survivor who kept the family together during their hardest years.
