This Lady earned 4.10GPA first-class degree in Medical Dentistry, wins best student award

A brilliant young lady named Abigayle Edgar has earned a first-class degree in Medical Dentistry from the University of Technology, Jamaica, graduating with a 4.10 cumulative grade point average.

Her outstanding performance earned her the Best Graduating Student award for the Joint Colleges of Medicine, Oral Health and Veterinary Sciences at UTech.

Edgar's Story and How She Did It

Abigayle began her academic journey at the University of Technology in 2021, enrolling in the Doctor of Medical Dentistry (DMD) programme.

Despite several challenges along the way, she graduated in 2025 with first-class honours, emerging as one of the top students in her cohort.

Reflecting on her achievement, Edgar described being named valedictorian of the Class of 2025 as “the final mould in the clay” of her ambition to become a well-rounded dental practitioner.

Her interest in healthcare started early, with an initial dream of becoming a paediatrician. However, during sixth form, she discovered dentistry and was drawn to its patient-centred nature.

She explained that dentistry offered her the opportunity to build meaningful connections with patients while seeing the immediate impact of her work, alongside a healthier work–life balance.

But the journey through university was very challenging. Beginning her studies during the COVID-19 pandemic came with major difficulties, including struggling to focus during online classes and enduring a physically and mentally exhausting daily commute from home.

And this caused her to earn grades which she termed disappointing, but instead of bringing her down, it made her realise the need for a major shift in discipline, accountability, and organisation.

That decision paid off. Edgar adopted a structured weekend study routine, and her grades improved significantly. Her academic turnaround also earned her two scholarships, providing both financial relief and personal validation.

These included the UTech 60th Anniversary Scholarship and later the Dr Barry Wint Memorial Scholarship, which supported her through the final stage of her studies.

Beyond academics, Edgar values the dental outreach programmes organised by the College of Oral Health Sciences, where she treated individuals with limited access to dental care.

These experiences deepened her sense of purpose, reminding her that dentistry is not just about restoring oral health, but also dignity and confidence.

She recalled that one defining moment came during one of her toughest semesters, when she delivered her final complete denture to a patient. The patient’s immediate joy erased months of stress and reaffirmed her passion for the profession.

Edgar attributed success to her mother, whom she describes as her greatest cheerleader. She also credited her lecturers and faculty members for their high standards, guidance, and belief in her potential.

Having passed her licensing examination, Edgar now hopes to work as a dental surgeon in the public health sector, giving back to the community she grew up in.

Her advice to aspiring dental students is simple: stay focused, be clear about your goals, and aim to make a positive impact.

“We don’t just graduate with degrees. We graduate with confidence, competence, and the ability to make an immediate difference,” she said.
