AMERICA | A brilliant young lady named Saleshia E., has secured an admission offer from the University of California, Davis – School of Law in the United States to study for a Doctor of Law (Juris Doctor) degree, marking a major milestone in her academic journey.
Her achievement places her on track to become the first lawyer and first law school graduate in her family, a historic accomplishment that reflects years of perseverance, purpose, and advocacy.
Saleshia's Story and How She Did It
Saleshia began her academic journey at Florida State University (FSU), where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 2019.
Reflecting on her undergraduate years on LinkedIn, she described them as some of the best moments of her life, so intense and fulfilling that she initially felt too exhausted to immediately pursue graduate school.
Instead of rushing into the next phase, she made the deliberate decision to take a gap year, focusing on rest, self-discovery, and gaining real-world professional experience.
During this period, FSU hired Saleshia as an Outreach Specialist, a role she stepped into with faith and optimism.“I truly did not know what I was getting myself into, but I had faith and believed in God,” she shared.
Six months into the role, she found fulfillment in the work, the people, and the relationships she was building daily.
Her position allowed her to create tangible impact within the FSU community and the greater Tallahassee area, reinforcing her passion for service and advocacy.
Beyond professional experience, Saleshia spent time learning, engaging, and evolving her voice as an advocate and social justice champion.
Her involvement as a YP4 Fellow and HIA Fellow equipped her with the knowledge and tools needed to challenge systemic injustice and advocate for marginalized communities. These experiences did not just shape her worldview; they clarified her calling.
Driven by a desire to create meaningful change, Saleshia applied to law school and was accepted into the University of California, Davis – School of Law, officially beginning her journey toward a legal career.
The acceptance represents more than an academic win; it is a generational breakthrough, positioning her to become the first lawyer her family has ever produced.
Saleshia expressed deep gratitude to the institutions and organizations that believed in her vision, including Pipeline to Practice Foundation, Inc., Sacramento County Bar Association, California ChangeLawyers, and WilmerHale.
Their support, she says, has fueled her determination to one day walk across the graduation stage “with style and grace,” donning her cap and gown within the next three years.
To fellow first-generation students, Saleshia offers a powerful reminder: “There’s no need to rush, and there’s no undue pressure. Your journey is yours to define.”
