After facing five rejections in her quest to study Medicine, a determined young woman named Aghogho Okpara refused to give up on her dream.
Today, she has successfully graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), proving that persistence can turn setbacks into remarkable success.
Her achievement is especially inspiring because it came after years of disappointment, resilience, and hard work.
Rather than allowing repeated rejection to define her future, she used each setback as motivation to keep moving forward until she achieved her lifelong goal of becoming a medical doctor.
Aghogho's Story and How She Did It
Born to Nigerian and Irish parents, Aghogho had dreamed of studying Medicine from an early age. At just 16 years old, she sat for her first medical school admission examination, hopeful that she would secure a place to begin her journey into the profession she loved.
Unfortunately, things did not go as planned. Her first application was unsuccessful. She tried again and faced another rejection. Then another and another.
Despite applying multiple times and enduring five separate rejections from medical school, her dream remained out of reach.

For many people, such repeated setbacks would have been enough reason to abandon the goal entirely. However, Aghogho chose a different path.
Rather than giving up, she decided to continue building her academic credentials while keeping her medical ambitions alive.
In 2017, she gained admission into University College Dublin, where she enrolled for a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences.
The programme provided her with a strong scientific foundation and allowed her to remain connected to the healthcare field while she continued pursuing her ultimate goal.
Throughout her undergraduate studies, she distinguished herself academically, demonstrating the same dedication that had kept her going through years of rejection.
Aghogho’s hard work paid off in 2022 when she graduated with First Class Honours in Biomedical Sciences, one of the highest academic distinctions awarded by the university.
But for Aghogho, the degree was not the final destination. After six attempts and years of perseverance, her breakthrough finally arrived.
In 2022, she was offered admission to study Medicine and began her MBBS programme, bringing to life a dream she had been chasing since her teenage years.
The admission marked the beginning of a new chapter. Over the next four years, she underwent the demanding academic and clinical training required of future doctors.
From lectures and laboratory work to hospital placements and patient care experiences, she committed herself fully to the rigorous journey of medical education. While pursuing her medical degree, Aghogho also built an impressive profile beyond the classroom.
She emerged as a leading youth voice across Ireland and the United Kingdom, earning recognition for her contributions to education, healthcare, research, and social impact.
Her influence continued to grow as she collaborated with globally recognized organizations and used her platform to advocate for educational equity and opportunities for young people.
Now, after years of determination and sacrifice, Aghogho has officially graduated with her MBBS degree, fulfilling the dream that once seemed impossible.
Reflecting on her journey, she shared how far she had come from the young girl who received five rejection letters from medical school. “My story began with five rejections from medical school,” she wrote on LinkedIn.
“Today, it ends with an Upper Second Class Honours Degree, Forbes 30 Under 30 Europe 2026, academic awards for excellence in cancer research, she added.
In addition to her degree, Aghogho earnrd multiple business awards collaborations with the Nobel Prize and Apple, building a platform reaching over 100 million people globally, and founding Achieve with Aghogho, an educational equity organisation helping students achieve their potential.”
Despite the numerous awards and recognitions she accumulated along the way, Aghogho said the most important accomplishment has been the opportunity to impact lives and inspire others through her story.
She also shared a powerful message for anyone currently facing rejection or setbacks. “Today, I can say with confidence: the end of your story does not have to look like the beginning. Let this be proof,” she said.
