AFRICA | A brilliant Nigerian lady named Adeoye Oluwajunwonlo Janet has achieved a remarkable academic milestone after graduating with a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology (Distinction) from the University of Ibadan (UI), years after running a small food business to survive.
Her inspiring journey, which she shared on LinkedIn, reflects a powerful combination of determination, purpose, and resilience.
Adeoye's Story and How She Did It
Adeoye began her academic journey at the University of Ibadan, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology in 2020. Like many young graduates, she tried to build a stable career path, but her reality took a different turn.
After school, she became an entrepreneur, running a small buka (semi-restaurant) where she sold amala and Yoruba delicacies to NYSC corps members. It was a thriving business, having enough customers satisfied, money was flowing, and life seemed good on the surface.
But she felt that something was missing, her passion and long term dream. “Business was good… But something wasn’t thriving — my passion, my ideal self, my long-term dream,” she said.
That realization pushed her to make one of the boldest decisions of her life:
to choose purpose over comfort. She walked away from her business s to pursue a path that allowed her to “serve mental nourishment,” a calling she believed was just as essential.
In 2024, Adeoye returned to the University of Ibadan to pursue an MSc in Clinical Psychology.
The journey was demanding, but she stayed focused, consistent, and grounded in faith. She not only excelled academically but also served as the Class Representative, a role that sharpened her leadership skills and connected her with mentors and colleagues who helped shape her growth.
One year later, in 2025, she graduated with Distinction, reaffirming her belief that choosing purpose leads to transformation.
Adeoye expressed deep gratitude to God, her parents, and everyone who supported her. She also thanked her supervisors, whom she described as her academic “mother and father,” whose guidance, patience, and insight shaped her dissertation and professional growth.
