After she had extra year, this lady overcomes the odds to earn medical degree and win best student award

A determined young lady named Sylvia Aputazie has defied the odds to earn her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria—despite facing delays, setbacks, and moments that nearly made her give up.

Her journey is a powerful story of resilience, perseverance, and the courage to keep going even when the path becomes uncertain.

Sylvia's Story and How She Did It

Sylvia began her medical journey in 2017, fully committed to achieving her dream of becoming a doctor. However, her path was far from smooth.

Over the course of eight years, she faced multiple challenges, including disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, academic strikes, and the intense demands of clinical training.

At one point, she had to repeat a year, which meant she could not graduate with her original set, a situation that left her feeling discouraged and emotionally drained. “I almost dropped out of medical school because I was burnt out and struggling,” she shared in a Linkedin post.

As if that wasn’t enough, she also survived a life-threatening concussion shortly after her birthday during one of her clinical postings, the same posting in which she would later emerge as the best student.

Despite these challenges, Sylvia refused to give up. In 2025, she finally achieved her dream, graduating as a qualified medical doctor from the University of Ibadan.

Her hard work and dedication also earned her the prestigious Sir Kofo Abayomi Prize as the Best Student in the Igbo-Ora Community Medicine posting.

Her journey was not defined by academics alone. While in medical school, Sylvia built multiple businesses and actively contributed to projects with the Blossom Girls Outreach Foundation, showing her passion for impact beyond the classroom.

Reflecting on her experience, she noted that medical school shaped her values, discipline, empathy, responsibility, and a desire to make a difference. However, she also discovered a deeper interest in the business and management side of healthcare.

Today, Sylvia is channeling that passion into building a healthcare-focused initiative aimed at improving lives and systems. Her vision includes promoting preventive healthcare, supporting healthcare professionals, and helping healthcare businesses thrive while still saving lives.

She is particularly passionate about reducing non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, cancer, and obesity through awareness, fitness, proper nutrition, and holistic well-being.

Beyond healthcare, Sylvia also advocates for financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and personal development, believing that true impact comes from empowering people both medically and economically.
