A brilliant young lady named Sened Estifanos Teklay has achieved remarkable academic success after overcoming discouragement and proving doubters wrong to earn multiple law degrees with excellence across the United Kingdom and the United States.
Her journey is a powerful example of resilience, courage, and determination, showing that people should never abandon their dreams because of negative opinions or limitations placed on them by others.
From being told at a young age not to even consider law school, Sened went on to build an exceptional legal and academic career internationally.
Sened's Story and How She Did It
Her journey of excellence began during her high school years, where she graduated in 2021 with an outstanding 4.00 grade point average.
Following her secondary education, she moved to the United Kingdom and enrolled at King’s College London for a foundation programme in Global Politics and Social Science. There, she distinguished herself academically and completed the programme with first-class results.
After completing her foundation studies in 2022, Sened secured admission into Queen Mary University of London to pursue a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree.
Beginning her legal education in 2022, she was fully active in academics, leadership, and student engagement while navigating the demanding nature of legal studies abroad.
Despite the rigorous workload and challenges associated with studying law internationally, Sened remained focused and consistently excelled throughout the programme.
In 2025, she graduated with a First-Class Honors degree in Law, an achievement that opened even greater opportunities for her globally.
Sened’s academic excellence and leadership qualities earned her admission into Duke University in the United States to pursue a Master of Laws (LLM) degree.
Reflecting on her admission to Duke University, Sened shared her excitement about joining a highly diverse and accomplished global cohort representing over 40 countries.
She also expressed gratitude to the mentors, supporters, and advisors who helped guide her through the highly competitive U.S. LLM application process, including essay preparation, interviews, and career guidance.
Moving abroad again, this time to the United States, marked another bold chapter in her legal journey. At Duke University, Sened continued building an impressive record of academic excellence, leadership, and public service.
Throughout her LLM programme, she became deeply involved in activities that reflected her passion for law, advocacy, community service, and global engagement.
She earned Duke Law’s prestigious Pro Bono All-Star Award in recognition of her commitment to public service and legal advocacy.
Sened also served on the executive board of Duke Law’s Women of Color Collective and worked with organizations handling some of the most pressing immigration cases in the United States.
Beyond academics, she pushed herself personally and professionally by participating in MBA classes at Fuqua School of Business, representing Eritrea at the United Nations 70th Commission on the Status of Women conference.
Also, she delivered a graduation candlelight dinner speech and engaged actively in campus leadership and international student representation.
In 2026, she graduated from Duke University with a Master of Laws (LLM) degree and also earned a New Ventures & Entrepreneurship Certificate.
Reflecting on her journey, Sened shared that she entered Duke as one of the youngest students in her programme but graduated with lifelong friendships, global mentors, and experiences she never imagined possible.
She spoke emotionally about how 10-year-old Sened, who was once discouraged from dreaming about law school, and 18-year-old Sened, who was told to be “modest” about her ambitions, would never have imagined how far she would come.
Sened credited God, her family, mentors, professors, and the international student support system at Duke Law for helping her through every stage of the journey.
