AFRICA | A brilliant Nigerian lawyer named Ife Agboola has achieved academic success in the United Kingdom, earning a Master’s degree with Distinction in Global Development (Politics, Governance and Development Policy) from the University of Manchester, England.
Her achievement comes shortly after her call to the Nigerian Bar, a milestone she described as the fulfilment of a lifelong dream to contribute meaningfully to global development and policy.
Ife's Story and How She Did It
Ifeoluwa began her academic journey in 2013 at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), where she studied Law (LLB) and graduated in 2018 with a Second Class Upper Division. During her undergraduate years, she demonstrated strong leadership and advocacy skills.
She co-organised the first Women in Leadership Conference, the Activate Girls Conference, and facilitated workshops on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—experiences that strengthened her passion for youth empowerment, leadership, and global development.
In line with Nigeria’s legal training pathway, she proceeded to the Nigerian Law School, where she graduated in 2021 with another Second Class Upper and was subsequently called to the Bar as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
While at law school, Ife actively participated in the Human Rights Clinic, gaining hands-on experience in human rights advocacy and contributing to impactful legal research.
She also represented her law school at an international conference on the Rights of Nature, where she engaged in global discussions on environmental justice. This experience further deepened her interest in the intersection of law, development, and environmental rights.
Following law school, Ife became deeply involved in community mobilisation and youth-led initiatives, organising programs focused on social change before relocating abroad for further studies.
In 2024, she moved to the United Kingdom to pursue a Master’s degree at the University of Manchester, focusing on sustainable development, global inequality, governance, international policy, and economic transformation.
Maintaining her record of excellence, she graduated in 2025 with a Distinction. Reflecting on her achievement, Ife described the experience as a privilege and a fulfilment of her dream to understand and address complex development challenges.
For her dissertation, she examined the political economy of poverty in the United Kingdom, analysing rising poverty levels in high-income countries through a critical political economy lens.
The work earned her a distinction, and she expressed gratitude to her supervisor for her guidance and intellectual support.
Additionally, the research strengthened her commitment to development scholarship and policy-relevant research, particularly around how capitalism, migration, and inequality interact to shape lived experiences of poverty.
She hopes to pursue a PhD in this field in the future. Alongside her studies, Ife made significant contributions to the university community.
She served as a SEED Employability Champion and SEED Changemaker, supported sustainability initiatives, co-hosted academic conversations, volunteered at conferences, and represented postgraduate students in formal university meetings.
Ife also worked with and drew inspiration from leading development scholars during her time at Manchester.
Currently, she is working as a Teaching, Learning and Student Experience Intern at the University of Manchester, gaining insight into pedagogy and academic support within higher education.
Looking ahead, Ifeoluwa remains committed to the development sector, with interests in policy analysis, development research, and social policy, driven by a desire to contribute meaningfully to solving global challenges.
