A determined young man named Lethabo Malekahs, has defied incredible odds to achieve academic success, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Law with top honors from the University of Limpopo at just 24 years old.
His journey is one of resilience, courage, and an unbreakable will to rise above life-altering challenges.
Lethabo's Story and How She Did It
Lethabo lost his sight at the age of 10 after a tragic encounter with a spitting cobra in 2011. The incident occurred when he opened the door of a pit toilet at his home in Mamaolo village.
The snake’s venom entered his eyes, gradually deteriorating his vision until he became completely blind. “The venom deteriorated my sight until I could not see anymore, and I thought my life was over,” he recalled.
The loss of his sight marked the beginning of an even more difficult phase. His parents struggled to find a school that could accommodate a visually impaired child, forcing him to drop out of school for nearly two years.
During that period, he spent most of his days at home, listening to the radio and trying to make sense of his new reality.
Fortunately in 2024, hope came when he gained admission into a school for the blind in Polokwane. There, he began to rebuild his life and rediscover his passion for education.
With renewed determination, he later joined a study group at Setotolwane Secondary School, where he successfully completed his matric.
Driven by inspiration from notable figures who overcame disabilities, Lethabo remained focused on his goals.
And his hard work paid off when he emerged as one of South Africa’s top 20 matric achievers in 2021 in the Capricorn District. Motivated by a deep desire to advocate for vulnerable and underserved communities, he went on to study Law at the University of Limpopo.
With the support of the institution’s Reakgona Disability Centre, he navigated the demands of legal education and continued to excel. Today, he has graduated with top honors, a milestone that reflects years of perseverance, discipline, and unwavering determination.
