AFRICA | A determined young man named Aaryn DuBose has achieved an extraordinary milestone after graduating from Tuskegee University in the United States with a master’s degree in Veterinary Science.
This feat places him among the just 2% of Black veterinarians in the entire country.
Aaryn's Story and How He Did It
Aaryn’s journey into veterinary medicine began with heartbreak. At just seven years old, he witnessed the tragic loss of his beloved dog, Thunder, who was struck by a car. The helplessness he felt that day changed the course of his life forever.
“I remember it like it was yesterday. On our way to the hospital, I watched him take his final breaths. From that moment, I vowed that I would never watch another animal suffer without being able to help,” he said.
Fueled by this childhood promise, Aaryn began to build his academic path. He enrolled for a pre-veterinary track, earning a bachelor’s degree in Biology from the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University in 2021.

Determined to become a professional who could make a real difference, he proceeded to Tuskegee University, where he completed his master’s degree in Veterinary Science, graduating as one of the best in his class.
Celebrating his achievement, he shared a powerful quote from Booker T. Washington:
“Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome.”
He added gratitude for the friends and family who supported him. “God put these beautiful souls in my life, and I am forever grateful,” he said.
Aaryn’s academic success did not end there. His achievement motivated him to push further. He was accepted back into Tuskegee University to pursue a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree.
Reflecting on his journey, he stated that he almost doubted himself, but regardless, he pushed towards it.
“I remember looking at myself in the mirror, my junior year of undergrad, thinking this would never be possible. I never gave up on my dream, even when the odds were stacked against me. If I can do it, you can too. Dr. DuBose loading…”
Today, Aaryn stands as an inspiration, driven by resilience, leadership, and a passion to serve both animals and his community. He hopes his story will motivate future generations, especially children who may not see many people like themselves represented in veterinary medicine.
“Every time I walk into a room, I know I’m representing more than just myself. If I can show one kid from a background like mine that this is possible, then all the hard work is worth it,” he said.
