A brilliant young man named Tapelo Blessing Nkambule, has achieved an extraordinary academic milestone after earning a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree at just 26 years old from University of Mpumalanga.
His achievement has drawn admiration for the consistency, discipline, and academic excellence that marked his journey from undergraduate studies to becoming one of the youngest doctorate holders in his graduating set.
Tapelo’s success is particularly remarkable because he not only became the youngest doctoral graduate in his set, but also joined the small number of individuals around the world who attain a PhD at such a young age.
Tapelo's Story and How He Did It
His academic journey at the University of Mpumalanga began in 2017 when he enrolled for a Bachelor of Agriculture degree in Agricultural Extension and Rural Resource Management.
From the beginning, he showed strong commitment to academic excellence and completed the undergraduate degree in 2019.
Rather than stopping there, Tapelo immediately continued advancing academically. In 2020, he completed his Honours degree in the same field, further deepening his expertise in agriculture, rural development, and resource management.
His passion for research and agricultural development pushed him even further. He proceeded to pursue a Master of Agriculture in Agricultural Extension, which he successfully completed in 2021.

After gaining professional experience for about two years, Tapelo returned to the University of Mpumalanga in 2023 to begin his doctoral studies in Agriculture.
Now, at just 26 years old, he has successfully earned his PhD, marking the culmination of years of dedication, resilience, and academic growth.
Tapelo’s doctoral research focused on solving real-world agricultural challenges affecting local communities.
His thesis, titled “Efficacy of Conservation Agriculture in Enhancing Food Security Among Small-Scale Farmers in Mpumalanga, South Africa,” examined how conservation agriculture can strengthen food security and improve the resilience of small-scale farming systems.
Part of his research was presented internationally at the 12th International Conference on Agriculture held in 12th International Conference on Agriculture, giving his work global academic exposure and recognition.
Reflecting on his achievement during the University of Mpumalanga’s 11th Graduation Ceremony, Tapelo expressed gratitude for the journey and everyone who contributed to his success.
He described his years at the university as a period filled with learning, growth, challenges, resilience, and transformation.
According to him, reaching the milestone of earning a PhD serves as proof that persistence, support, and trusting the process truly matter.
He also thanked the University of Mpumalanga for creating an environment that supported both his academic and personal development.
Tapelo also expressed his gratitude to his supervisors, lecturers, colleagues, family members, friends, funders, and supporters who stood by him throughout the journey.
