A determined woman named Naledi Maponopono has achieved a remarkable milestone, earning a PhD in African Languages from University of Cape Town in South Africa.
With her achievement, Naled became the first person in her family, and her entire community, to attain a doctorate degree.

Naledi's Story and How She Did It
Naledi’s academic journey began in 2014 at the University of Cape Town, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Administration. After completing her undergraduate studies, she gained work experience before discovering a new passion that would redefine her path.
In 2019, she made a bold decision to pivot into the field of African Languages, enrolling in a diploma programme.
This transition marked a turning point in her academic journey. Driven by purpose and curiosity, she proceeded to pursue a Master’s degree in African Languages and Literature, which she completed in 2022.

Upon completing her Master’s degree, Naledi advanced immediately into a PhD programme in African Languages at the same institution. In 2026, after years of rigorous research, writing, and academic contribution, she successfully earned her doctorate.
Her research, centered on social justice, is deeply rooted in her lived experiences. Coming from a community often affected by social challenges such as poverty, substance abuse, and limited access to opportunities, Naledi chose education as a means of resistance and empowerment.
