A determined young woman, Camel Gbènanto Fassinou, has achieved a remarkable milestone after earning a PhD scholarship to study Nematology at the University of Florida.
Her story reflects that background does not limit destiny. From being the first in her family to access education to securing a global PhD scholarship, Camel’s journey proves that with determination and support, extraordinary achievements are possible.
Camel's Story and How She Did It
Camel, from the Benin Republic, began her academic journey at the Université Nationale d’Agriculture, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Science in 2017 with a strong second-class upper.
Driven by her passion for agriculture and research, she proceeded to the Pan-African University Institute of Life and Earth Sciences (PAULESI), where she obtained a Master’s degree in Plant Breeding in 2021, graduating with a 4.47 CGPA—just 0.03 shy of a first class.
In 2022, Camel’s leadership potential earned her selection into the prestigious Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders.
Through the program, she was placed at Texas Tech University, where she underwent intensive training in Leadership in Public Management.
This experience expanded her global perspective, strengthened her leadership skills, and connected her with a network of professionals across Africa and the United States.
Building on her academic and leadership journey, Camel was later selected as a fellow of the Schlumberger Foundation Faculty for the Future Fellowship, a highly competitive program that supports women from developing countries pursuing advanced studies in STEM fields.
This prestigious fellowship paved the way for her PhD opportunity at the University of Florida, where she will specialize in Nematology.
Camel’s journey was not without difficult decisions. As a woman navigating cultural expectations and nearing her 30s, she had to balance family life, career ambitions, and academic goals.
At one point, she nearly gave up on applying for the fellowship due to the demands of motherhood and professional commitments.
However, encouragement from a mentor helped her push through and submit her application—an action that changed her life.
“As the first person in my family to access higher education, pursuing a PhD has always been my goal… I almost gave up, but that encouragement made all the difference,” she declared.
Camel credits her success to faith, resilience, mentorship, and the unwavering support of her husband. She also expressed deep appreciation to the Schlumberger Foundation for its commitment to empowering women in science.
