20 years after dropping out to raise her children, this woman returned and earned Nursing degree at 40

AMERICA | 40 years old, Fredonia Johnson has achieved a dream she once put aside, earning her degree in Pratical Nursing from Brightwood College in the United States.

Her story is a powerful reminder that sacrifices made for family do not erase the possibility of personal achievement; they simply delay it.

Fredonia's Story and How She Did It

After high school, Fredonia did not take the traditional route into higher education. Instead, she settled down and made a conscious decision to devote herself fully to raising her children.

“I wanted to be a full-time mother while they were growing up. I homeschooled, volunteered with PTA, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Vacation Bible School—everything. I held roles in every activity they were part of,” she said.

For 20 years, her children were her priority and her purpose. And although she loved every moment, the dream she once carried quietly remained alive.

When her children became older and more independent, Fredonia felt ready to return to school. “Sometimes it’s important to put your family first—and I’ve done that for two decades. But now, I can focus on me a bit and revisit the dreams I once paused. It’s never too late,” she said.

She admits that had she gone to college right after high school, she might not have had the passion and drive she carries today. At 40, she returned with intention, excitement, and maturity.

Her journey led her to Brightwood College, which she discovered after careful research.“I liked that Brightwood had a strong track record in nursing and that the class schedule allowed me to still be present for my family,” she explained.

Balancing motherhood and full-time classes was challenging, especially after being out of school for more than 20 years. Fredonia recalled that evenings were the hardest.

“Sometimes I just want to relax after class. But my family pushes me to finish my homework. Once you decide to do it and commit, the adjustment becomes easier,” she said.

She found comfort in Brightwood’s flexibility. ”The school lets students schedule classes around their lives. I’m at school all day and home by five, able to give my family what they need. Some weeks are packed, but it’s manageable with balance and organization,” she said.

Fredonia credits her success not only to determination but also to the unwavering support around her.

“The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that the people in your life really do want you to succeed. My family has been amazing, but so has everyone at Brightwood—from faculty to instructors to admissions, even the campus president. They’ve been cheering me on from day one.”

To Fredonia, the most surprising part of her journey was discovering how much she genuinely loves school. “Growing up, school was always… just school. But now? I love it. Going back at 40 might be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made,” she said.

With her nursing degree in hand, she stands as proof that dreams delayed are not dreams denied. Fredonia hopes her story motivates women who feel they’ve waited too long to go back.

“Go for it! You’ll never know what you can do if you don’t try. Balancing everything is hard sometimes, but things will fall into place. If I could do it—even after nearly skipping my admissions meeting—you can, too,” she encouraged.
