A determined woman, Vanessa Landegger, has proven that it is never too late to rewrite your story.
After stepping away from her dream of becoming a healthcare professional 23 years ago to raise her child, she returned to school and successfully earned a Nursing degree from Yale University, United States at the age of 50.
Her journey is one of resilience, sacrifice, and the courage to start again.
Vanessa's Story and How She Did It
Vanessa initially began medical school over two decades ago with the dream of becoming an obstetrician/gynecologist. However, shortly after starting, she made the difficult decision to drop out in order to focus on raising her first child.
Like many parents, she chose family over career at the time, putting her ambitions on hold. Over the years, she remained committed to growth.
She went on to earn a master’s degree in public health and another in education, eventually working as an elementary school science teacher for a decade. Still, her passion for healthcare never truly faded.
Her turning point came through an unexpected source, her son. Inspired by him, Vanessa trained as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and began actively serving her community.
This experience reignited her love for medicine and made her realize she still had more to give. Determined to pursue her dream again, she applied to nursing school and began her journey at Yale.
Interestingly, both mother and son found themselves studying similar paths at the same time, even attending the same online academic sessions—an unforgettable moment for both of them.
Despite the challenges of returning to school later in life, Vanessa stayed committed. She balanced rigorous coursework, hands-on training, and personal responsibilities with discipline and focus.
Years of patience and perseverance finally paid off when she graduated as a certified nurse. Now, she is set to begin her professional career as a midwife, marking the beginning of a new chapter in her life.
Reflecting on her journey, Vanessa said it should serve ss a powerful reminder that dreams do not expire. Whether delayed by responsibility, fear, or life circumstances, it is always possible to start again, and succeed.
