A determined Nigerian woman named Comrade Cynthia has rewritten her life story in the most powerful way, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science at the age of 54 from the National Open University in Nigeria.
Her journey is not just about education; it is a story of resilience, survival, and starting over when life seems stacked against you.
Cynthia's Story and How She Did It
Cynthia’s early life was not a smooth one. Raised in a polygamous home, she faced rejection and hardship from a young age. At just 17 years old, she was forced out of her home and had to navigate life on her own.
Despite dreaming of becoming a medical doctor, Cynthia could not pursue that path because of her circumstances.
And from there, her journey took several painful turns. Along the line, she met a partner who was violent, and during one of their arguments, he destroyed all her academic certificates.
There, she endured six years of domestic violence in marriage and became a single mother of six children, solely responsible for their upbringing.
At every stage, life presented reasons for her to give up, but Cynthia remained steadfast and persevered through it. With no formal qualifications, Cynthia relied on her skills to survive.
She worked in tailoring and fashion design and also went on to learn herbal medicine and deep tissue massage, which paved the way for her. Through these, she raised and educated all six of her children.
Years later, during a family gathering, her younger brother publicly mocked her for not having a degree. That moment, though painful, became the spark that changed everything.
In 2019, Cynthia made a bold decision to return to school. She rewrote her O-level examinations, sitting in classrooms again alongside younger students. She passed her science subjects and performed excellently in the exams.
By 2020, at the age of 48, she gained admission into the National Open University of Nigeria to study Environmental Science and Resource Management.
Her years of persistence paid off, and in 2026, at 54, Cynthia graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree, proving that it is never too late to start again.
Reflecting on her journey, Cynthia shared that age should not stop you from starting again, and one’s background should not determine one’s future. ”You are not too old to start again, your past does not define your future, and delays are not denials,” she said.
