A determined young woman named Chellae Simmonds has earned a Bachelor of Nursing degree from the University of Technology (UTech), Jamaica, graduating with an outstanding 3.96 GPA and First Class Honours.
Her nursing journey was deeply personal. Chellae’s passion for healthcare was shaped by tragedy after she lost her sister to Stage 4 gastric cancer.
As she had to walk closely with her sister throughout the illness, which exposed her to the realities of patient care, this ignited a strong desire to pursue nursing as a life mission.
Chellae's Story and How She Did It
Before making this career shift, Chellae had already completed a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting in 2016 at the University of the West Indies. However, after her sister’s passing, she made the courageous decision to return to school and pursue a career in healthcare.
In 2021, she enrolled at UTech after three rigourous application process, but she did not give up, determined to follow her new calling. Her academic journey was demanding, requiring her to balance rigorous coursework and intense clinical rotations while also navigating grief.
Beyond her studies, she took on the responsibility of helping to raise her late sister’s three children, further testing her strength and commitment.
Despite these challenges, Chellae remained focused and resilient, eventually graduating in 2026 with exceptional academic performance.

She credits her lecturers and mentors for providing guidance and encouragement throughout her journey, helping her maintain high standards while reminding her she was not alone.
After successfully passing the Regional Examination for Nurse Registration (RENR), Chellae is now preparing to begin her career as a registered nurse. She also hopes to further her education and become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) in the future.
Sharing her story on Instagram, she reflected on the emotional weight behind her achievement: “Behind this achievement is a story of resilience. Three applications, one calling”.
”Every challenge shaped me. The days I wanted to quit were the days that made this moment possible. Late nights, silent tears, heavy days — but I showed up for myself every single time. With grit, grace, and God, I made it,” she added.
She emphasized that nursing is not just a profession but a calling. “What is meant for you will never miss you. Every ending is also a beginning. I am proof that purpose cannot be delayed, only divinely timed,” she said.
Chellae also acknowledged that success comes with responsibility, expressing her commitment to helping others as doors were opened for her.
