AFRICA | A determined Nigerian student, Okonkwo Chukwudozie Joshua, who faced repeated setbacks in his quest for university admission, has triumphed against all odds by securing a fully funded scholarship to study Medicine at St. Petersburg State University, Russia.
Joshua, an aspiring medical student, had his dreams delayed after being denied admission twice by Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK).
Despite scoring an impressive 304 in the 2024 JAMB exam and performing well in the post-UTME, he was not offered his desired course, Medicine and Surgery.
Joshua first sat for the JAMB exam in 2022, earning a commendable 284. However, he was denied admission to his chosen course, leaving him disheartened. In 2023, he missed the JAMB registration while waiting for an admission offer that never came.

Determined to pursue his dream, Joshua retook the UTME in 2024 and achieved an outstanding score of 304. Yet again, his hopes were dashed when UNIZIK offered him admission for Radiography instead of Medicine, a course he declined.
Frustrated by the repeated setbacks, Joshua turned to social media to share his story. In a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter), he expressed his disappointment:
”First JAMB, 2022- Was denied admission, Missed 2023 registration while waiting for admission. “Spent another 1yr home reading. “2024- Had 304. No admission again. “My dream to become a doctor in the mud. “God knows I fought a good fight, will have to move on w/out school,” he wrote.
His tweet went viral, garnering widespread attention and support. Many netizens offered words of encouragement, with one user, Enyo Sam, stepping forward with a life-changing opportunity.
Enyo Sam informed Joshua about a Medicine program at Saint Petersburg State University in Russia, which offers full-tuition scholarships. Enyo and his team pledged to assist Joshua with the application process and admission guidelines, giving him a renewed sense of hope.
Joshua expressed gratitude for the support and shared insights into how he coped with the delays in his education. While waiting for admission, he ventured into website and graphic design to stay productive.
However, the disappointment of being denied admission repeatedly forced him to shift focus and ultimately double down on his studies. “Now this again. But I’ll definitely pick up! It’s not over until I win!” Joshua wrote in his tweet, reflecting on the challenges he faced.
