AFRICA | A determined young woman named Itumeleng Boshielo, has defied the odds to earn a PhD in Molecular Medicine from the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa, despite facing academic setbacks that could have derailed her dreams.
Instead of giving up, she turned failure into motivation, making a promise to herself that she would one day earn a PhD, a promise she eventually fulfilled.
Itumeleng's Story and How She Did It
Itumeleng began her academic journey at the University of Limpopo, where she enrolled to study Molecular Life Sciences.
Her early years were far from smooth, as she failed two major courses, Chemistry and Mathematics, in her first year. However, she resat the courses, passed them, and resolved that those setbacks would not define her future.
She graduated in 2014 with a bachelor’s degree and continued at the same university to pursue a master’s degree in Biochemistry, which she completed in 2016, further strengthening her expertise in life sciences.
After gaining some professional experience, Itumeleng took another bold step toward her dream
She enrolled for a PhD in Molecular Medicine at the University of the Witwatersrand, balancing her doctoral studies with work as a medical writer. Despite the demanding workload, she persevered and successfully completed her PhD in 2022.
Reflecting on her journey in a post shared on Twitter, she opened up about her struggles and triumphs.
“I was never the brightest in my family. I wasn’t top of my class. In fact, I failed Maths and Chemistry in my first year of university. Those were hard moments — moments where doubt crept in, where it would’ve been easier to give up,” Itumeleng said.
”But somewhere deep inside, a small voice kept whispering, ‘One day, you will get your PhD.’ I held on to that belief, even when it felt impossible,” she added
She described the achievement as more than just a degree but a symbol of every failure she turned into fuel. ”Every tear that became a stepping stone, every ‘no’ that made me fight harder. And trust me, ke sa tlo popa,” she declared.
The phrase, loosely translated, expresses pride and determination, affirming her belief that she would succeed despite the obstacles.
