A brilliant young woman named Jessica Oziligbo has achieved outstanding academic success after graduating with a First Class degree in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria.
Her exceptional performance earned her the prestigious title of Best Graduating Female Student in her department, an inspiring achievement in a male-dominated field.
Jessica's Story and How She Did It
Jessica began her university journey in 2021, stepping into an unfamiliar and highly competitive environment. Coming from a small private school background, adjusting to large lecture halls filled with top students from across Nigeria was overwhelming.
She openly shared how the pressure made her question her abilities, especially when she encountered something new, studied hard, and still failed. Her early results left her in tears, as she struggled to meet the high standards she had set for herself.
Despite the challenges, Jessica held on to one clear goal, to graduate with a First Class degree. Through setbacks, self-doubt, and difficult moments, she kept going, semester after semester.
She described her journey as one filled with late nights and intense study routines, emotional breakdowns and “hot tears”, and constant self-reflection and renewed determination.
But she remained resilient through it, a trait she credits as the turning point in her success.
“I would clean those tears, question God, and go again the following semester… the goal was rock. It didn’t change, even when it seemed unachievable.”
In the end, Jessica did not just meet her goal; she exceeded it. She graduated with First Class Honours in Petroleum Engineering, best Graduating Female Student, and was the only female First Class graduate in her department.
Jessica also emphasized the importance of community and positive relationships. She credited her success to a close circle of friends, mentors, and supporters who stood by her during her lowest moments.
