A brilliant young man named Neville Shakespeare has achieved a historic milestone by earning a Doctor of Law degree (Juris Doctor) from Penn State Dickinson Law in the United States, becoming the first college graduate and first lawyer in his family.
His achievement is remarkable not only because of the prestigious degree he earned but also because of the barriers he overcame to get there.

Neville's Story and How He Did It
His academic journey began at Westfield State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice. The programme provided him with a strong foundation in law, public policy, and the criminal justice system, helping to prepare him for the next stage of his legal education.
Determined to become a lawyer, Neville proceeded to Penn State Dickinson Law, one of the leading law schools in the United States, where he pursued a Juris Doctor degree.
However, Law school cam with new challenges and demands. Over three rigorous years, he immersed himself in legal studies, mastering complex legal concepts, participating in intensive coursework, and developing the skills required to practice law professionally.

Despite the pressures of legal education, Neville remained focused on his purpose. He carried with him not only his personal ambitions but also the hopes of his family, community, and others who saw themselves reflected in his journey.
In 2026, his years of sacrifice, discipline, and determination paid off when he successfully completed his Juris Doctor programme and graduated from Penn State Dickinson Law.
Sharing the milestone on LinkedIn, Neville reflected on how far he had come, describing the achievement as bigger than himself.
He recalled his upbringing in East New York, Brooklyn, and his Jamaican roots, noting that many people from inner-city neighborhoods, low-income communities, immigrant households, and under-resourced schools are often underestimated before their stories are even known.
He added that the issue was never a lack of intelligence or talent but often a lack of access to opportunities, networks, and resources.
Neville explained that throughout law school, he carried more than textbooks and assignments. He carried the dreams of his family, the support of his community, and the experiences that shaped him into the person he is today.
But the journey was not easy. There were moments that tested his resilience, challenged his confidence, and stretched him beyond his comfort zone. Yet those same experiences helped him discover a deeper sense of purpose and strengthened his commitment to his goals.
As the first person in his family to graduate from college and become a lawyer, Neville acknowledged the mentors, professors, classmates, friends, prayer groups, and loved ones who supported him along the way.
He also used his achievement to encourage first-generation college students, graduate students, law students, and young people from underrepresented communities not to doubt their place in academic and professional spaces.
Addressing Black students, students of color, neurodivergent students, and students with disabilities, he reminded them that they deserve to be in every room where opportunities exist and should never allow anyone to make them feel otherwise.
Neville emphasized that when support systems are lacking, students should not be afraid to build their own communities and networks, noting that sometimes people must create the support they need in order to succeed.
Now officially holding the title of Juris Doctor, Neville sees this achievement not as the end of his journey but as the beginning of a new chapter. He has aspirations of using his legal education in public service and leadership, with ambitions that extend beyond the courtroom.
“The little boy from Brooklyn did not quit. Now watch what God does next,” he said.
